Finally, the wait is over
The results of the UPCAT were apparently released today at the Diliman Campus. When news of the release got to us, people got frantic calling up their contacts in UP asking them to look for their names etcetera. I asked some of my classmates to ask their contacts to look for my name too.
It was our TD tutoring session at Nangka when the contacts replied.
“Victor! Congratulations!” exclaimed a fellow classmate whose sister in UP informed him that he passed too. Oh my God! I passed the UPCAT!! Did I really pass the UPCAT?! Woohoo!! I passed the UPCAT!! And I got into my first choice of course, Film & Audio-Visual Communication in Diliman!! I’m going to study in UP!!
Phew, okay. Anyway, I should calm down… I’m too happy to write anything close to cohesive right now.
But then, oh shit. You see together with my dreams of being a UP student is the wish that I’d be there with at least a handful of my high school classmates come freshman year. And yet… there appears to be only four to six of us in class who passed. And, of them all, only two are going to UP. That already includes me. Shit, so I’m happy that I passed but I feel really depressed at the same time.
Does UP really scrutinize and take into consideration the per capita income of an applicant’s family? I find it very hard to believe that some of my brilliant semihonors classmates didn’t get accepted.

Hey .. nice site u have ~ Cool ~

Hey Vic,
What’s your course in UP?
WELCOME TO PEYUPS!!! kuha ka na ng profile sa peyups.com nyahahahaha, and your up.edu.ph email na rin. mwahahahahahahaha.
regarding the income: yeah, it CAN work against you. i hate to say it, but looking at some recent grads of UP… (cough), well, let’s just say they’re nowhere near what i expected of them. disappointing? quite. :/
yes, it WAS an afternoon filled with mixed emotions. on one hand you had a handful of those with silent ecstasy in their eyes (that includes you), then you had those who were fidgeting, still anxiously waiting for news of THEIR status, the handful of those who HAVE to seek education elsewhere, and of course, the few who didn’t care at all (since they never applied in the first place).
in response to your query on the per capita income, let’s just put it this way. on the average, ateneans are the “haves” in society. that means they (we) have more money to spend on things like education. as washington sycip, one of sgv’s founders, mentioned, a state-funded education (like up), should be reserved for the “have-nots”. if a student’s family can afford to spend more for education, let them… and let a poorer student avail of a chance at quality education for once. that way, everyone has a crack at a bright future.
makes you think, doesn’t it?
congrats! your post made me remember the times we were waiting for our own entrance exam results. have fun in college!
congrats!
well, welcome! i just hope that whatever you learn in the institution you would live them by heart and whatever glory you get now, it mustn’t go to your head.
as to the per capita income being taken into consideration in the upcat, i wish they (up system by the rule) do it but they do not. the upcat result only reflects the score you had in the exam. the UPG on the other hand is the consolidated result of your upcat with your high school standing (the third year grades, apparently). however, in the event you got accepted in up and decided to study in there, you will have the option to queue for the neverending pile of application for scholarship. in there, the responsible people are going to rank you in a bracket according to your family’s income. this is the way it works. now, if both your parents are working, i advise you not to spend a time on this. you’ll just find your paper in the trash. even those who are capable of landing in bracket 1 gets only the 4th.
good luck and god bless.

Yes. I was very surprised also that my Atenean acquaintance (he graduated already from HS and now taking up a BS course in AdMU) didn’t get in, considering that he got really high scores in the exam and he was consistently in the honors list. And then I heard he picked Computer Engineering as a course.. okaaaay. Mahirap talagang makapasa sa ComEng even if you’re from Ateneo.
Anyway, the point is normally Ateneans, Lasallians and students from all the other private schools in Metro Manila don’t pass UPCAT because UP thinks they’re not good enough. (Hehe, well UP thinks YOU’RE one of the best students.. congrats.)
Since UP is a public university, they offer various scholarships for bright students who come from distant provinces and others who cannot pay the tuition. UP does not admit many students from private schools because they know that these students can afford to study in other universities and can pay the tuition without sweat. In other words, kaya minsan maririnig mo sa mga schoolmate na ang UP pang- jologs, etc. kasi hindi naman talaga yun built for sosyal people.
Just keep this in mind: Cream of the crop ka. (That was my mantra when I was a freshmen in UP.) Peyups people have a reputation of being activists, nudists, feminists, or just plain weirdos– but who the hell cares? Inggit lang sila kasi UP tayo.
Congrats again!
I WAS frustrated when I received a text that states that I was not able to pass the UPCAT.Shit! Sayang talaga!Ang tanga tanga ko naman…!
>>>Wala daw sa list ang name ko. To all na nandito sa rum na ito, just for confirmation, if you will go to UP and check for the result, JUST look if I did not or did passed the UPCAT.Thanks a lot!
>>>VICTOR, CONGRATS!BUTI KA PA, U.P. NA….
Congratulations!
You are so lucky you know what you want, and it seems to me that your only conflict is being away from your classmates. Which is practically a non-issue because if they are going to Ateneo, it’s not Nicaragua.
Affirmative Action is why UP takes into consideration income. 40 - 60 ratio. Meaning they’ll take 60 per cent from public schools.
AUGH, this is driving me insane.
Congratulations! See you there! ^_^
Congratulations, Victor. There will be a lot more learning outside the classroom. But it will be grand.
Hi. I happened to visit your page a few months ago. I know the feeling of waiting the UPCAT results. I’ve been through with that feeling…..17 years ago. Now the wait is finally over. Good luck to you! I’m so sad, my cousin didn’t make it.
hi vic. Ü i’m confused if i should choose UP or ateneo. may i know why you wanted UP so bad and not stay in ateneo where you can just continue your sheltered life? *i don’t mean to be offensive or anything here*
BLEEDING_HEART: exactly. i will be less sheltered in UP.
Congratulations Vic! For knowing what you want…and for actually getting what you want! Make us proud.
Congratulations! Uy, welcome to UP! Iskolar ka na rin.
WOW!!!congrats…you really made it!!!well…wishing you more power and GOD bleSsSsSsS!!!
