Chronicles for July 15-18, 2004
THURSDAY. I attended the university student summit, where representatives from various colleges shared and reported to the student body their problems and all. It was held at the NISMED auditorium and I was with some of my blockmates. We weren’t required to be there, but classes were suspended for the duration of the summit, so we just went.
In the shallow point of view, everything basically boiled down to the government’s lack of funds for education, and how the present UP administration is trying to delve into commercial means in order to fund itself. Which I presently think is a wrong solution to the problem. I find it kind of depressing and annoying however, that many UP students demand so much from the government and yet apparently, one survey conducted recently, showed that a good percentage of this country’s national university scholars want nothing better than leave the nation that’s funding their education, after they graduate. That’s so sad.
I didn’t sit through the entire summit. I left in the afternoon and met with my ‘buddy’ from MCO to discuss the sigsheet and other things I have to accomplish for my application in the organization.
FRIDAY. I went with my mom to the school where I had my elementary education. She was scouting for locations for the business she is trying to set up. It’s been years since I stepped into that school. It’s so weird that everything looked a lot smaller! But surely, it’s just that I’m a lot bigger? I find it cool that the principal still recognized me, even if I didn’t say anything at all.
I had classes in the afternoon. The usual Friday routine always involves spending five hours with Erik since we have the same Friday schedule. We spent a good one hour at the sunken garden during our lunch break. Okay, we’re running out of things to do during free time.
After classes, I met with my co-applicants for Cinema Arts Soc. at the Mass Comm. cafeteria. We decided on which ideas to present next week to the CAST members as pre-production short film concepts.
My mom and my brother picked me up at around 5 and we went to SM North to try and watch King Arthur, but parking was hell so we didn’t push through.
SATURDAY. I had driving lessons late in the morning. I am beginning to realize why jeepney drivers are well-hated.
SUNDAY (TODAY). The family went out and watched King Arthur. Most of the reviews I’ve read concerned differences between the fact and the legend and which one critics liked better. I couldn’t care less. Whatever. If I become a director, one of my goals will be to produce a movie like this featuring a real Filipino hero with similar legendary feats. We could use a little more self-admiration sometimes.
I think that UP students have just chosen security over the reality of public service for saying that they want to leave this struggling country for, of course, obvious reasons. I don’t know maybe its because they were taught to be just one.
