Guimaras oil spill
Most of us in the Philippines have probably heard of the Guimaras oil spill from the news. For a small island whose people’s livelihood relies much on the sea, this catastrophe is really devastating. And it will get worse. Much of the 2 MILLION liters of oil still lie within the sunken ship.
I was searching and bloghopping for news and other information on how to help, and I came across Project Sunshine Sunrise. The website appears to have been set up by the provincial government of Guimaras to disseminate information regarding the disaster and how people can help. Unfortunately (for a student like me), much of the help they need apparently consist of financial donations and logistical help.
So, what to do? Talk about it and blog about it. The more people know, the less it will be sidelined. I also read somewhere that a hair salon chain would be donating hair to the clean-up effort. Yes, I’ve heard of this before, human hair being effective material for oil slick absorption. Well, I think it’s time for me to get a haircut. This, aside from boycotting Petron to give them a lesson for murdering the livelihood of our Guimaras folk.

Right. I bet not all of us are aware of the damage the oilspill has contributed to the coastlines of Guimaras and the only way for everyone to learn about the problem is for us bloggers to talk about it.
hi there bikoy, hopped from jaypee’s
apparently, not only will the guimaras be affected by this tragedy but negros and iloilo as well where fishing is one form of livelihood… and i can’t even live without a fish for the whole day…
nway, one solution for this problem is using enzymes that could biodegrade the bunker… i don’t know if the government has this option for the cleanup coz when we say enzymes, it means, money… mahal kasi ang enzymes… i know our professionals know about this solution and i don’t know if it is being applied already…
i guess our ‘reactive’ attitude is what keeps us forever in a bind. pag walang mangyaring sakuna hindi kumikilos para ayusin ang dapat. now we hear a lot about legislations, double hulling of tankers (IMO regulations matagal na to), etc…kelan pa tayo magising???
I found a site supporting bikoy’s statement regarding the help of hair for clean up: http://www.cnn.com/TECH/science/9805/28/t_t/nasa.hairball/
By the way, I have done my part in my blog. If you have time, please visit it. Thanks
Yeah, I saw this awhile ago sa evening news. I have a hair-pulling habit pa naman. Now I have more reasons not to stop.
i was planning on getting my hair cut last weekend but got lazy. i swear orgmates are looking fabulous after their hair cuts.
celeni: you and i both have !!!
Vic, the site’s Project Sunrise, not Project Sunshine.
Patty: Yeah, I’ve diagnosed myself with that. BTW, if you’re still planning to cut your hair, do it sa Azta along Katipunan, they’re doing that hair donation thingum.
Celeni: i just have my hair cut in the cheapest parlor i can find. but i’ll try it out.
