Bittersweet UP Christmas (Lantern Parade)
According to the press release by Diliman Chancellor Sergio Cao, the much-anticipated annual Lantern Parade was cancelled due to threats to persons and property.
With our without administration support however, students from the College of Fine Arts pursued the annual Lantern Parade.
All afternoon, Ayeen and I were going around Mass Comm encouraging people to join the parade and gather at Quezon Hall. We talked to our dean but she highly discouraged us from pursuing the plan. Well, we didn’t heed. We still gave away the white laces and stars to people who stayed in Mass Comm and asked them to join us parade.
Our council chairperson actually berated me for this. Hay. It’s not that I didn’t lead people to the rally. It’s just that people weren’t that responsive to the idea. I was thinking the two aren’t that mutually exclusive of each other so Ayeen and I decided to gather everyone to parade, which was what they wanted. Anyway, I’ve said my piece in an email. Bahala na sila.
Ang kakapal ng mukha namin. Our lantern is stationary so it’s stuck there at our booth. In other words, we joined the lantern parade without any lantern in tow. We were even chanting out loud, “Wala kaming lantern! Wala kaming lantern! Maingay lang kami!” then everyone would start shouting ang waving our glittered styrofoam stars and white laces. Wahh, hindi ko alam kung hahangaan ko ang mga kaibigan ko for keeping the spirit up or mahihiya ako sa ginagawa namin. Pinagbigyan naman kami ng mga tao. Pumalakpak naman sila. Since we made too many white laces and glittered stars, we also gave lots of them away to the audience.
Next level school spirit talaga! LoL. Actually, keri ang lantern parade na FA lang, pero for the spirit of the thing… maybe the more the merrier.

for example, iisang student lang ang ayaw ng tofi…papayag na rin lang naman ba tayo dahil mas gusto ng nakakarami ang tofi at kahit alam nating mali?
this may be sound too messianic pero kaya nga andito tayong mga totoong student leaders to tunay na sumusulong ng OBJECTIVE interests ng ating mga constituents…

im for the tuition fee increase. ive read the report prepared by the school of economics. and everything is reasonable. im dissappointed with these disruptive communists (well, i call clueless activists disruptive communists). i mean, even if they smash or burn the chancellors car (which they did) or kidnap his family, it wouldnt change a thing. they would never influence how the board sees the fee adjustments. they just ruined the lantern parade, which was cancelled by the chancellor after the attacks. i was in up that friday night, and i saw kids wanting to see the parade, which didnt push through, cos of these disruptive communists. well at least the disruptive communists got what they wanted, not stopping the tuition fee increase, but ruining the lantern parade. selfish communists. i dont earn much, but i pay taxes, and i expect these students to study rather than go out in the streets and be unproductive. study, graduate and get a job.

i won’t even begin to discuss the chancellor’s penchant for exaggeration. that pompous rat deserves more than having students rapping at his car demanding explanations.

the lantern parade was cancelled by the executive committee against alarms of ‘threats to life and property’. you exhibit your stupidity by swallowing the imputation that these “threats” were posed by the UPcommunity (students, faculty, staff, etc.). The protest was organized jointly with student councils. now, when did you hear of a student council or facuty union seeking to threaten the lives of its constituents(count yourself as a possible exeption)? there is also the fact that the BOR has been previously informed (since October) by the USC that every meeting of theirs will be met by protests against the TOFI proposal. The BOR then proceeds to schedule their railroading for the 15th of December in the unlikely hopes of reducing participation in the protest as everyone will have been busy with preparations.

as for your student protesters (’selfish communists’ is an oxymoron if you know the meaning of either word, dumbass) to whom you recommend that they ’study, graduate, get a job’:
first, we were the ones who pushed for the lantern parade to continue despite the paranoia propagated by the executive committee because unlike the excutive committee we recognize and respect the hard work of students and the UP community in preparing for the parade.
second, do you not understand how the policies being implemented by the UP administration and the Philippine government are cutting the odds against the majority so that studying, graduating, and getting a job are becoming less and less possible? i suggest you take what little pay you have, spend less time offering your vaunted opinion and buy some books.
third, we all pay taxes, moron. it is precisely why we shouldn’t be charged so much for education in a state university.
