The incoming UP Diliman University Student Council held its first planning seminar last weekend at the Claretian Seminary in Quezon City.

It was fairly all right. I have to say, however, that the meetings took excruciatingly long, and it came to the the point that I didn’t know if the length of our deliberations meant that we were genuinely concerned and that we would like to scrutinize all the proposals or if some members really wanted to delay the proceedings for one reason or another.

The committee deliberations and elections, especially, went on for hours and hours. Believe it or not, we finished our first day at four in the morning (the next day already, obviously). And we didn’t even finish four committees.

I’ll reserve for now my personal comments on how the deliberations proceeded, but for certain, it seems to me that people in the incoming council are still all hung up over the issues and the wounds of the past elections. Such we can’t really totally avoid, if you ask me.

As I’ve said, however, I believe the planning seminar, though it didn’t completely cover everything we needed to plan within two days, was productive enough to inspire us to start working and prove our mandate.

That weekend, I was elected chairperson of the Mass Media Committee, the press and media arm of the USC. Aside from me, Councilor Nem Canete was chosen to chair the Finance Committee; Councilor Sherry Tismal was chosen to lead the Ways & Means Committee; Councilor Bang Dizon was chosen to lead the Secretariat Committee; and CMC Rep. Ruth Miguel was chosen to lead the Freshmen Committee.
