Last Friday night, I went with some fraternity brothers to the Ayala Museum in Makati to see a special staging of “Ako si Ninoy,” a musical performed by the Philippine Stagers Foundation. It is, as its title suggests, a stage play about the late Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., and how his heroism is reflected in the lives of several individuals in the present time–a school teacher, a teen actor, a farmer activist, a labor union organizer, and a migrant worker.
It is no secret that I have issues with some I-am-change campaigns for its condonation of simplistic neutral daily activities of individuals as heroic enough to effect change. I was afraid that this stage play might carry the same message. Fortunately, for the most part, it doesn’t. The very fact that it portrayed individuals who fought and struggled for what was just and right in their school, in the factory, in the streets, overseas, and even in the entertainment industry, is a manifestation that it takes courage, determination, and action to effect change in one’s family, community and society.
The play has catchy song numbers, and romantic subplots, and is thus largely targeted towards an audience of young people. It is hoped that this play would inspire young individuals to realize their potential to effect change in their communities, not simply by doing what is expected, but by, like Ninoy Aquino, being brave enough to take action to fight for what they believe is right.
“Ako si Ninoy” will have a grand gala presentation at the Meralco Theater on August 14, 2009, and will be on tour around schools, universities and malls for the rest of the year.

It is good. BUT
I didn’t like it that much,(because) they made Ninoy God-like, hello? Ipapanganak sa mundo si Ninoy the Hero part? with doctors and nurses singing? WEIRD MUCH. LOL. It made me remember the coming of Jesus Christ which should be given much more importance. (Christmas is near)
The best part(s)
1. Ninoy and Cory in the cell, Ninoy is Atty. Vincent Tanada, btw, Good job, you are one true Artist! that should be recognized. I hope you win. for all of your categories. Fingers Crossed X
2. Yosef the artist and his story..
I have great respect for Ninoy but they used profane words such as Burat and such in this musical. I don’t recommend this play for conservative families.

The start was CRAZY! it was intimidating, it will make you curious but my ears hurt because it was too high pitched!
But the rest of the story was good… genuine Filipino traits.. and the song with the “right now, na na” rythm.. splendid!
They told us it was their 3rd show for the whole day, that’s why it wasn’t that much energetic.. and I understand.
I am a critic,(duh!?, haha!) I have watched a lot of musicals already,I have been to Broadway several times (NEW YORK) duh!?, but this is a very great attempt for an original Filipino musical which is very very good.
P.S. I might be biased for criticizing this play, because this is the first time I’ve watched an all original Filipino Musical, which I think one of the first in the Philippines, when I also watched this, I wasn’t in a good mood because of this usher.. read “BAD PART” pero I promise other Filipino’s who loved the Aquino’s as much as I did, do watch this!!!!

Pinaka bastos pa of all ung mga ushers.. was this girl, I remember her hair tied, with long black dress who shouted at me and my classmates, “Bakit ba ang gulo gulo niyo? Talo pa kayo ng kabilang school eh!? kanina pa kayo ha!” btw. I’m from Bataan Montessori School. and she compared us with another school and that’s really a good thing to do wohoo! (sarcastic)
It made me furious, buti na lang hindi ako sa kanya nagreklamo. sa ibang tao.
First of all!!
1. You did not orient us on how to enter and exit the theater properly in the way you wanted.
2. You should have not shouted at us we are guests.
3. You should have asked other ushers to help you.
4. You never talk to your guests that way.
5. My school or we, did not sign any agreement about the rules and regulations for example, SHOUTING AT US!
6. The only rules accepted technically is the rules printed on your tickets. because we did not sign any agreement about/regarding the rr’s to follow.
If you seem offended I’m really really SORRY, but its is true. Sana naman mapagsabihan ka so you wouldn’t be rude the next time, my classmates were very annoyed by your shouting, Please show respect to your guests. We can pay a lot. My Classmates and I are rich. hindi sa pagmamayabang pero. You do not do that kahit na pulubi lang ung manonood or kahit average class people lang. Sana lang Please.
Not a fan of the show since they made ninoy god like. The acting of some characters are not that good and the crew are rude.
I disliked how they used some characters like the character that goes to multiple rallys. That character is underdeveloped and very hard to like. His character says he is fighting injustice in rallys but as seen by his actions he is just looking for a fight. His character provoked the police from the start by pushing the approaching police when they got there. And it could be said that he doesn’t know anything he is fighting for and just joining in rallys. The strange part is that when he got caught by the police it turns out that he is a communist(hmm) which is unexplained from the start of his story.
Overall the them of the story is good since it asks us to be Modern day Filipinos by doing what we think is right and inspiring youth to fight against injustice.

whew! this one was a GREAT musical play! i’ve just witnessed it a while ago at Holy Angel University auditorium..sulit ang ticket price!=)
best musical play i’ve ever seen. mas nakilala ko si ninoy nung napanood ko knina lang sa holy angel university theater.
cno po gumanap na ninoy? bat iba po ata ung gumanap knina. mas bata siya unlike the picture above. ang galing kasi nia eh.

yeah, the usher was mean. pero knowing na manunuod kayo ng play, it is common sense na dapat manahimik kayo. hindi iyon mall na pwede kayong mag ingay kung gusto niyo (kahit mayaman kayo)~ peace (^.^)V
btw, the play was really great. buti nalang they performed in our school kahit nasa province (Holy Angel University). The one who performed Ninoy was Mr. Kierwin Larena (but in the booklet that they are selling, gumaganap rin siya bilang Yosef. Atty. Vince was not around). I really want to watch it again, how i wish~ ^^
