More USC ‘08 Committee Deliberations

Two days weren’t enough to allow the University Student Council (USC) to deliberate, establish and elect the chairpersons of its various committees, so we held a special assembly last Thursday at the USC Office in Vinzons Hall to discuss such unresolved matters.

We started promptly at six in the afternoon, but as expected, deliberations ensued for more than six hours. The assembly adjourned by almost midnight with only three committee establishments and leaderships resolved. That gives us a rate of a committee resolution every two hours.

Vargas Museum visits

For four years in UP, I never really bothered to visit the Vargas Museum near the College of Arts & Letters. Come to think of it, it’s not actually isolated, not as much as, say the Math Building, for example. In fact most of the jeepneys in UP ply past it all the time. But I never made the effort to go inside the building all these years.

A few weeks ago, a friend, who volunteers to watch over the paintings at the second floor a few days a week, invited me to come on a Wednesday, which is the museum’s free-day when admission fees are waived (though the entrance fee is only 15 pesos anyway, for a UP student).

It was a very pleasant museum visit. There was barely anyone else in the museum, so it was really quiet and peaceful.

I was staring at the paintings on display this month. Some of which were by Fernando Amorsolo, and other paintings depicting the Philippine countryside. It all seemed quite contrived and romanticized to me. Women and other peasants were in ornate clothes and all-smiles despite the tedious farm work they appear to be doing. What more if you place them in what was a predominantly feudal set-up back then. Beautiful works of art, nonetheless.

The guard at the entrance confiscates phones and cameras from visitors so you wouldn’t be able to take any picture, as I haven’t.

USC ‘08 Summer Planning Seminar

The incoming UP Diliman University Student Council held its first planning seminar last weekend at the Claretian Seminary in Quezon City.

It was fairly all right. I have to say, however, that the meetings took excruciatingly long, and it came to the the point that I didn’t know if the length of our deliberations meant that we were genuinely concerned and that we would like to scrutinize all the proposals or if some members really wanted to delay the proceedings for one reason or another.

March 14 Anti-Arroyo Youth Rally

March 14, 2008. Thousands of students from different universities in Metro Manila marched to Liwasang Bonifacio to continue the clamor for truth and accountability from the scandal-ridden Arroyo administration.

It was the Friday before Holy Week, many students were busy with exams and other final academic requirements for the semester. Despite the academic load and pressure on that day, around a hundred students and teachers from UP Diliman joined the youth rally at Liwasang Bonifacio.

A short program was held at the steps of Palma Hall before we all boarded hired jeepneys to Espana Avenue in Manila, from where we marched all the way through Quiapo until we crossed the Pasig River to Liwasang Bonifacio.

Election hangover (Part III)

As a candidate, I wasn’t able to take a lot of pictures during the campaign. I couldn’t carry along my bulky camera all around campus. Here are some of the few pictures that I was able to take right before and during the campaign season.

These were taken on February 13, 2008 from one of the first discussion groups and training sessions we had as a slate right before the elections.

The ones below were taken on February 20, 2008, a Wednesday. After a brief discussion group regarding our General Program of Action, and right before we were interviewed at the Philippine Collegian office, we had some time off at the Sinagbayan tambayan on Vinzons Hill.
